Contemporary façade systems must simultaneously satisfy structural performance, weathertightness, thermal efficiency, fire safety and long-term maintainability. Integration of these requirements into a single engineered system is the central challenge for high-rise and complex envelopes.
System integration and safety
Modern unitised and stick systems are designed so that structural, thermal and sealing functions work together rather than as separate layers. Safety considerations include glass retention, fire compartmentation at the façade–floor interface, and the ability to replace individual units without compromising the whole envelope.
Sustainability attributes
Material efficiency, thermal performance and the potential for disassembly and recycling form part of the sustainability profile of current façade solutions. Tested systems that maintain their performance over decades reduce the need for premature replacement.
Shetty concluded that the most successful façades are those in which integration, safety and sustainability are treated as inseparable design drivers from the earliest stages of the project.
