Digital tools have reshaped façade design, client expectations and construction processes in India. Bhrugu Gangadia, Manoj Joshi, Chirayu Oza, Upendra Walinjkar and Bhaumik Patel examined how.
Before widespread digitalisation, façade design relied on two-dimensional drawings, physical models and extensive site coordination. The arrival of advanced modelling software, 3D visualisation and BIM has altered both the speed of design and the expectations of clients who can now see highly resolved images of the building envelope long before construction begins.
From drawings to models
Panelists described the shift from traditional drawing-based methods to coordinated digital models that allow architects, façade consultants and fabricators to work from a shared source of truth. Early adoption focused on visualisation; current practice increasingly uses models for clash detection, fabrication data and construction sequencing.
Client aspirations and 3D visualisation
High-quality 3D visualisations have raised client expectations. Photorealistic images and walkthroughs make it easier to secure buy-in for complex geometries and material combinations, yet they also create pressure to deliver on site what was promised on screen. The panel noted that the gap between visualised intent and buildable reality remains a frequent source of tension.
Software as design aid
Advanced software can simplify repetitive tasks, test environmental performance and generate fabrication information. At the same time, panelists cautioned that tools do not replace judgement. The quality of the outcome still depends on the experience of the design team and the willingness of all parties to coordinate early.
Current status and future direction
In India the use of modelling software for façades is growing but remains uneven. Larger commercial and institutional projects routinely employ BIM and specialist façade modelling; many mid-scale schemes still rely on more conventional methods. Looking ahead, the panel anticipated greater use of digital tools not only for design and fabrication but also for maintenance and long-term performance monitoring of the building envelope.
