Facade carries cultural intent
The design research began with the way gathering places are made: layered cladding, exposed structure, curved forms and materials that feel crafted rather than anonymous. That research shaped the facade rather than being translated into a graphic applied at the end. The objective was to create an enclosure that could feel familiar and tactile while still supporting a contemporary arts programme.
Daylight becomes material
The team used in-house analysis tools to study how the curved and sloping form receives sun. That allowed openings to be placed where daylight would be useful and where the facade could glow after dark. The goal was a building that behaves like a beacon or campfire: luminous enough to invite people in, but not dependent on a transparent skin around the entire programme.
Hospitality supports performance
Cultural buildings need generous thresholds because visitors arrive in groups, linger and move between public spaces. A layered facade can create those transitions while buffering Calgary’s climate. Depth, texture and controlled transparency allow the building to be welcoming without exposing interiors to excessive heat loss or glare.
Transparency marks thresholds
Cultural buildings often need openness and mystery at the same time. Bridgman and Hall use transparency where it supports arrival, gathering and orientation, allowing visitors to see activity and understand how to enter. Elsewhere, more opaque or translucent construction carries the thermal load and gives the building a material presence. The result is a front door that glows and reveals occupation without making the institution read as a generic commercial curtain wall. That balance also supports curatorial flexibility. Exhibition and performance spaces may need controlled light, while foyers and circulation benefit from daylight and connection to the city. By aligning facade openness with programme, the design avoids using high-performance glass to solve conditions that would be better served by solid wall. Transparency becomes a spatial tool rather than a percentage target.
Craft adds cultural depth
The design research links curved form, layered cladding and exposed structural elements to traditions of making and gathering. Those references are most convincing when they affect how the facade is assembled rather than being reproduced as surface graphics. Repeated panels, joints and structural bays create the rhythm; daylight reveals the depth between layers and changes the perception of the wall through the day. Digital analysis then tests that architectural idea against solar exposure. Openings can be tuned to admit useful light while avoiding unnecessary heat or glare, and the more opaque zones can carry insulation continuously. The project shows how cultural identity and technical performance can reinforce one another: material depth creates character, while the same depth provides opportunities for shade, thermal control and a more durable envelope.
